Research and Teaching
The specialists at the Augenklinik Universitätsallee are licensed to train residents. Three of them are university professors with PhD degrees. Such statistics are highly unusual for a non-university institution. This high scientific competence paired with enormous clinical experience are the basis for an excellent resident training. In the last 15 years more than 15 aspiring ophthalmologists have been fully or partly trained in our clinic.
European VitreoRetinal Society (EVRS)
The expertise developed in this institution is disseminated throughout the world by extensive training and teaching activities. The Augenklinik Universitätsallee is founding member of the „European VitreoRetinal Society”, an organization dedicated to teaching and the exchange of knowledge and experience. It accomplishes this by its website and its annual meetings which are attended by upt to 1000 participants from more than 60 countries. PD Dr. Lucke one of two visionary founders of the EVRS is currently president of this professional society.

Publications
Scientific curiosity and scientific thinking are an integral part of our daily work with patients. Three of the ophthalmic specialists in our institutiona are PhDs and have contributed to more than 112 scientific papers over the years. 25 were developed in house. There has also been 1 book and almost 20 contributions to scientific volumes. More than 800 lectures and presentations have been given at scinetific meetings and symposia in Germany and abroad. This capacity for critical thinking and the extensive exchange with colleagues from all over the world is to the direct benefit of our patients since it guarantees diagnostic methods and therapeutic concepts in keeping with and sometimes ahead of the latest scientific knowledge.
Studies
Clinical studies should be performed where the patients for them are found. The Augenklinik Universitätsallee is predestined to collate its clinical experience in a scinetific context and to disseminate the deductions derived therefrom.. This is constantly done and actively pursued as part of our qualtiy management. The large number of publications bear witness to the success of this approach.
The VIBERA Study is a unique example of our commitment. For the first time ever a drug is investigated in a pharmaceutical trial as to its safety and efficacy without the cooperation of the manufacturer. The VIBERA study compares Lucentis and Avastin in their effect on the wet form of macular degeneration. The study is being conducted on our suggestion by the Pharmacological Institute of the Klinikum Bremen Mitte. The Augenklinik Unversitätsallee is the leading investigative site. This study finds enormous interest internationally, since it is one of only a handful studies of its kind and the only one worldwide in which the study protocol fulfills all criteria required for a pharmaceutical trial.
