On the one hand it offers a wide spectrum of special diagnostic and theraputic methods for patients with difficult and unusual conditions affecting their eye, particularly if it concerns the posterior segment. These include ultrasound, fluorescein angiography, high resolution OCT and a number of lasers.

On the other hand it is an outpatient surgical institution with the capacity and spectrum of a large eye hospital. Not only cataract operations are performed as outpatient procedures, but also - a novelty in Germany - the complicated operations on vitreous and retina, starting from simplest retinal detachments and ending with macular translocations in age-related macular degeneration. Operations against glaucoma and strabis,mus can also be performed without the otherwise standard hospital admission. Only logistic and reimbursement issues sometimes require an overnight stay.

The highly experienced scientifically trained medical team has been active in research and teaching within Germany and abroad for many years and thereby ensures the high quality level we are known for.

The success of this concept quickly became evident: After only 10 years of its existence the Augenklinik Universitätsallee, performing over 1500 vitreoretinal operations annually had become one of the largest and most experienced institutions for specialized care of diseases of the retina and vitreous in Europe – and was bursting at the seams.

In 2004 therefore it moved into a newly erected building nearby. Here all up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic methods are available in an area of more than 22,000 square feet. In 2009 an operative suite with 3 ORs was added which was designed in an unusually light and homely style for added patient comfort. The new building sports a bistro for covering waiting times – particularly for accompanying persons and is connected directly to the Hotel Munte so that many patients decide to spend the first postoperative night in the comfort of a four-star hotel.

A new small section for in-patients in selected cases allows for extended care around the clock and was instituted particularly for patients from far away or those who face reimbursement problems in the case of out-patient surgery.
